Word based faith…
Another foundational truth that we need to keep in our hearts is that faith comes from the Word of God. This means that we are going to have to continually be in the Word of God in order to see our faith grow and remain strong.
Look at Romans 10:17 with me, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” I remember my pastor explaining to us one time that the word we translate as “hearing”, in the original greek, is known as a continuous verb. What that means is you could translate it better by saying, “faith comes by hearing, and hearing, and hearing, and hearing,…” it’s not the Word that you heard just one time that brought you faith but rather faith comes to those who are continually hearing the Word of God. It comes to those who are consistently reading and studying the Word and it comes to those who are consistently hearing the Word preached. We have to allow ourselves to be in the place where we are consistently hearing from the Word.
With that said a number of times Jesus said, “to him who has ears to hear let him hear”. Sometimes we can hear or read the Word but not really be open to it. In the explanation of the parable of the sower in Mark
4:14 Jesus tells us that, “The sower sows the word.” He then shares how that word is received. We can sometimes tend to receive the Word improperly and miss out on the faith that God is wanting us to receive.
Remember that Jesus and His Word are inseparable, and that we are told that Jesus is the way the truth and the life. John 1:14 also tells us that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. This is talking about Jesus. This is really important for us to understand because when we receive the Word we receive more of what Jesus is, the way, the truth, and the life. His Word brings faith because it is Him and His Life and His Way of doing things coming to us. To not receive His Word is to not receive Him.
Let’s always make sure that our faith is founded on the Word of God and on who Jesus is. Faith based on anything other than Him will have cracks and holes.
